2026 is an important year for Oxford and for Oxford City Council

It also presents a unique opportunity for the IOA to shift the balance on the City Council, introducing more councillors who can be trusted to work for the benefit of local people.

This will be the last election to the City Council in its current form, before a new ‘unitary’ council structure is introduced. Whatever that structure is[1], the councillors elected this May will be in place for at least two years, until the new structures take on full responsibilities. If all goes to plan, this will be in Spring 2028, but, if there are delays to the restructuring, the council elected in May this year could be in place for longer.

Each city councillor is elected for 4 years, and elections are every two years, with half the council seats up for election each time. The first four IOA councillors, elected to the City Council in 2024, are therefore in post until 2028.

So, with Oxford City Council election now confirmed to be going ahead on 7 May, we have a real opportunity to expand our influence on the council and how it operates, as any seats we win in this year’s election will add to the existing four.
