Independent Oxford Alliance Announces Eleven Community Champions as Candidates for Oxford City Council Election

Oxford’s newest political party, the Independent Oxford Alliance, proudly introduces its slate of eleven passionate and community-driven candidates who are standing in the upcoming Oxford City Council Election on May 2nd, 2024.

Each candidate is a long-time Oxford resident, many within the ward they seek to represent, and all have been inspired by the urgent need to restore democracy and accountability in the face of recent controversial decisions by the City Council.

In response to the growing concerns of Oxford residents over the perceived lack of democratic processes, particularly regarding decisions on Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, Bus Gates, the Zero Emission Zone, the proposed Workplace Parking Levy and extension of Controlled Parking Zones, the Independent Oxford Alliance has emerged as a voice for the people, advocating for transparency, inclusivity, and community engagement.

The Independent Oxford Alliance stands on a platform of integrity, independence, and collaboration.

“Our candidates are not career politicians; they are ordinary citizens who have been compelled to stand up and make a difference in their communities,” said Dr Anne Gwinnett, Chair of the Independent Oxford Alliance. “They are your neighbours, friends, and colleagues who have witnessed first-hand the consequences of decisions made without proper consultation or consideration for the well-being of Oxford’s residents and businesses.”

The Independent Oxford Alliance candidates represent a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, united by a common goal to promote the interests of the local community above all else. From Barton & Sandhills to Hinksey Park, our candidates are deeply rooted in their respective wards and are committed to amplifying the voices of their fellow residents.

“Our candidates are not bound by the constraints of traditional party politics but are free to prioritise the best interests of Oxford and its residents above all else” added Dr Gwinnett. “Our candidates are here to listen, to engage, and to work collaboratively with residents to shape a future for Oxford that is equitable, sustainable, and inclusive.”
